Fly Fishing The Blackfoot River

The famous Blackfoot River of "The River Runs Through It" fame is a freestone river running north to south just 6 miles east of Missoula, Montana. This beautiful river holds medium size fish during the summer and fall months with many riffles and deep canyon walls.

Fishing pockets and riffles with attractors and streamers produce many fish. During the early spring months casting streamers into the shallow banks can bring many large brown trout up and trophy fish are caught at this time.

John and his experienced guides lead the way in early spring streamer fishing, showing many clients the thrill of fishing the Blackfoot River and the many opportunities it offers. Various big streamer patterns cast into the shoreline has made spring fly fishing on the Blackfoot River one of the most exciting fly fishing opportunities available in Montana.

Large trout slamming shallow water flies with heart stopping strikes and deep water runs gives the fly fisher memories for a lifetime.

The famous Salmonfly hatch occurs on the Blackfoot River in June and early July as high water is in effect making casting large stonefly nymphs and Salmonfly dry flies fast and furious, tight against the bank and trout smacking these big mouthful morsels. An experienced Blackfoot River guide and outfitting service is a must due to high fast water and various hazards along the way. This beautiful river is a must do river for any fly fisher.

The summer brings attractor flies and streamers hitting riffles, deep water canyon banks and pools waiting for rainbows and brown trout to take your offering. Many hatches that are prevalent on the other rivers seem to elude most stretches on the Blackfoot. but the many riffles, runs and deep pools and canyonized banks makes up for the lack of hatches.

The Fall brings streamers and big attractor patterns and the cooler weather and the beauty of the Blackfoot River can be really enjoyed. The freestone style of river offers the fly fisher many blind casting opportunities in many fly fishing situations. A great way to start and end a Montana Fly Fishing Vacation, the Famous Blackfoot River of Western Montana!
