The Bitterroot in late Fall...rising fish, beautiful scenery and solitude!

Bitterroot River - Blackfoot River - Clark Fork River
Rock Creek - Smith River - Big Hole River
Beaverhead River - Missouri River

John Perry’s Montana Fly Fishing offers complete and full guide service on most of Montana’s premiere trout rivers.

Rock Creek and the Smith River require special permits and trips on these rivers are booked well in advance. Overnight trips are available on most rivers.

Special requests and custom trips are always welcome! Some of our trips are floated on Lolo National Forest.

The Bitterroot
One of our favorite dry fly rivers. Believe it or not, we start fishing this beautiful river (with confidence) in March and April. Most of the browns over 20" that we catch during the year with the dry fly, are taken from the Bitterroot River. Fly Fishing the Bitterroot River.

Peak Fishing Times

  • Mid March thru Mid April
  • July thru October

The Blackfoot
Offers all the scenery you could ever ask for, but that's not all! The Blackfoot River is a fly fisher's paradise. You'll find great riffles, deep pools, boulders and pockets, and classic runs. The Blackfoot flows through box canyons, forest-land, meadows and boulder-strewn mountains. Fly Fishing the Blackfoot River.

Peak Fishing Times

  • Mid June thru Early October

The Clark Fork
Some of the most productive fly fishing anywhere is on the Clark Fork River. The lower stretches of this river turn into big water after the Bitterroot River joins it, just west of Missoula. Here the big fish tend to travel in "pods" and often feed aggressively on the river's numerous hatches. The Clark Fork flows through wooded and meadowland in the rolling foothills and wide valleys. Fly Fishing the Clark Fork River.

Peak Fishing Times
  • April thru Early May
  • Mid July thru Early November

Rock Creek
Is a spectacular stream structured so ideally that many fly fishers consider it the perfect water. Rock Creek winds through bucolic meadowland, old-growth forests, mountainous terrain and beautiful rock formations.

The salmon fly hatch on this blue ribbon stream has long been legendary, but week-in and week-out, Rock Creek fishes extremely well. This is an excellent place for an early season float, or a late season wade trip. We are one of only three outfitters permitted to do guided float trips on this stream during the "float season". Fly Fishing Rock Creek.

Peak Fishing Times
  • June for the Float Season
  • July thru October for Wade Fishing

The Big Hole
You have all heard of this one. The Big Hole generally fishes better early and late during the day. Some of the browns found here look like models and fight like prize fighters. Rainbows and grayling can also be caught here, but the brown really is the "king" of the Big Hole.

Peak Fishing Times
  • Mid April thru Mid May
  • June thru Mid July
  • September thru October

The Beaverhead
If you love to use stuff underwater, this river may be for you! Big, big browns and heavy rainbows are all over this place, but not really easy to catch. The Beaverhead is another one of the tail waters that we use. If you get the techniques down, you may have very productive fishing and you may catch the largest brown of your life!

Peak Fishing Times
  • July thru October

The Missouri
When most people hear the name of this river, they think of Lewis and Clark's great adventure - and they should! The Missouri has a lot of history associated with it. The Missouri is one of our prime rivers, we love taking people on it at certain times of the year. The Missouri is a tail water and it has some of the best fighting rainbows in the state.

Peak Fishing Times
  • April and May
  • Mid July thru Early November

The Smith River
One of the big bonuses of fly fishing Montana's rivers is the beauty associated with it. The Smith River is simply awesome! It has meadows, limestone cliffs, deep pools, constant wildlife and a lot of trout. Smith River trips should be booked one year in advance.

Peak Fishing Times
  • End of April thru Mid May
  • July and September (if water conditions permit)
